Dreams and What We Should Know

"You don't fail when you aim high and miss; you fail when you aim low, and you hit."

Dreams. It is interesting when we ask students about their future goals and we use the word 'dreams.' According to Merriam-Webster, a dream is, "a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person's mind during sleep." Unconscious, not actively seeking or thinking. What kind of narrative does this this word create for you as a life long learner?

Initially, we are told that our ultimate free form goals are "dreams." They unreachable because they are not active or conscious. They are just images that move through our minds. They are unattainable. Often times, we are told our dreams are to unrealistic to be goals. We are told to find a functional version of that dream or to settle for something that is appropriate for the world in which we live.

Where does the dream die? Where do we stop being afraid to make mistakes until our dreams work? Should we allow our goals to be labeled as dreams and swept to the side? I do not believe so.

Give your future a voice. In a world where technology can help anyone access others and resources, we need to be willing to try to keep our goals our goals and now allow them to become dreams. Consider what Lawrence is saying here. Consider his push to build a world of creators and dreamers. I believe we would be happier if we encouraged dreams to become reality instead of destroying them.
